Just Right… and then some!

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is not an obvious pantomime title, and that's precisely what makes it interesting. Our version sets the story inside a circus, which gives the whole thing an energy that a village or woodland setting can't quite match. Dame Bernie Barnum runs Barnum's Circus with her twin clowns Charlie and Cooper, her not-very-strong strongman Sampson, and Psychic Cheryl, whose gift of foresight is best described as technically accurate. The villain, Madam Meanie, wants to buy the circus out from under Dame Barnum, and the Three Bears arrive as a dancing act she'd very much like to poach. There is also a custard pie machine called the Pie-O-Matic 6000, which does exactly what it sounds like.

Synopsis

Barnum's Circus is struggling financially, and Madam Meanie, a rival circus owner with expansion plans and no scruples, has sent her associate Bean to assess the situation. Her plan is to buy Dame Barnum out at a knock-down price and add the whole operation to her growing evil empire.

When Goldilocks encounters the Three Bears in the forest and leads them back to the circus, things take an unexpected turn, for everyone. Madam Meanie sees an opportunity in the dancing bears, Dame Barnum sees a way to save her circus, and Baby Bear would really like her lollipop back.

This panto is porridge for the soul!

What the script looks like in practice

Psychic Cheryl demonstrates her gift:

Psychic Cheryl: 'I will now use the incredible power of my mind to correctly predict where this gentleman lives.' (She reveals the card) 'I knew it! For that is why I have written that you live… at home!'

Dame Barnum: 'That's not a very good prediction.'

Psychic Cheryl: 'I knew you were going to say that!'

Who this script suits

Goldilocks works well for groups who want a script with plenty of named ensemble roles at every level. The circus setting gives you a natural framework for adding acts, and the clown twins Charlie and Cooper are a gift for groups with a performer who enjoys physical comedy and quick costume changes. The Three Bears are warm, funny, and completely distinct from the broader villain plot until the two threads collide in the second act. Groups looking for something a little off the beaten track, a title audiences won't have seen quite as many times as Cinderella or Aladdin, will find this one repays the choice.
