A sweet and wickedly funny adventure
The baking theme in our Hansel and Gretel isn't just set dressing, it runs through the whole script. The story opens with Sugartown's centenary baking celebration, Dame Kitty Kipling runs the local bakery with her son Greg, and Griselda the witch's Gingerbread House is the destination rather than a backdrop. The humour leans into the theme without belaboring it, the puns are earned rather than forced, and the script has a warmth that suits family audiences without ever talking down to them. A Great British Bake Off sensibility, with a wicked witch and a fair amount of chaos baked in.
Synopsis
When Sugartown holds an enormous celebration of cakes and biscuits, the wicked witch Griselda feels conspicuously left out. As is her right, she demands that someone from the town come to visit her, and her henchman Stinkworth sets about making that happen, capturing Hansel and Gretel and taking them to the Gingerbread House deep in the forest.
Dame Kitty Kipling decides she can't stand by and let it happen. With her band of misfits, she heads into the forest to bring Hansel and Gretel home.

What the script looks like in practice
Greg considers his career options:
Greg: 'Maybe one day I'll open my own bakery and name it after myself.'
Dame Kipling: 'Don't be silly, no one will want to eat at a place called Gregg's!'
Who this script suits
Hansel and Gretel works well for groups of most sizes. The named baker characters, Mr Wollyhood, Mrs Peith and Miss Merry, can be played by three performers or distributed across a larger ensemble depending on what your cast requires, and the same flexibility applies to the ghost and townspeople scenes. The staging is straightforward throughout, and the baking competition opening gives the show an immediate, colourful energy that doesn't rely on elaborate set design. Groups looking for a script that's genuinely accessible without feeling thin will find a lot to like here.
